چکیده

GRB 990123 was the Ðrst burst from which simultaneous optical, X-ray, and gamma-ray emission was detected ; its afterglow has been followed by an extensive set of radio, optical, and X-ray observations. We have studied the gamma-ray burst itself as observed by the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory detectors. We Ðnd that gamma-ray Ñuxes are not correlated with the simultaneous optical observations and that the gamma-ray spectra cannot be extrapolated simply to the optical Ñuxes. The burst is well Ðtted by the standard four-parameter GRB function, with the exception that excess emission compared with this function is observed below D15 keV during some time intervals. The burst is characterized by the typical hard-to-soft and hardness-intensity correlation spectral evolution patterns. The energy of the peak of the spectrum, reaches an unusually high value during the Ðrst intensity spike, 1470 ^ 110 lfl Ep, keV, and then falls to D300 keV during the tail of the burst. The high-energy spectrum above D1 MeV is consistent with a power law with a photon index of about [3. By Ñuence, GRB 990123 is brighter than all but 0.4% of the GRBs observed with BATSE, clearly placing it on the power-law portion [ 32 of the intensity distribution. However, the redshift measured for the afterglow is inconsistent with the Euclidean interpretation of the power law. Using the redshift value of o1.61 and assuming iso[ 32 tropic emission, the gamma-ray energy exceeds 1054 ergs. Subject headings : gamma rays : bursts È X-rays : bursts

The puzzling case of GRB 990123 : multiwavelength afterglow study ⋆

We report on the BeppoSAX data analysis of the afterglow of Gamma–Ray Burst (GRB) 990123, one of the brightest GRBs detected by BeppoSAX. Mainly due to its exceptional brightness, this is the only source for which the Wide Field Cameras have allowed an early detection of the X–ray afterglow between ∼20 and 60 min after the GRB trigger. Besides, again for the first time, high-energy emission fro...

Will GRB 990123 Perform an Encore ?

The recent gamma ray burst, GRB 990123, has an absorption redshift zs = 1.60, implying an apparent energy E ≥ 3×10 erg, and a peak luminosity Lmax ≥ 6×10 53 erg s, assuming isotropic emission. This energy is ten times larger than hitherto measured and in excess of the rest mass of the sun. Optical observations have revealed an associated galaxy displaced from the line of sight by ∼ 0.6. This ra...

Jet Energy and Other Parameters for the Afterglows of Gamma-ray Bursts 980703, 990123, 990510, and 991216 Determined from Modeling of Multi-frequency Data

We model the radio, optical, and X-ray emission for the afterglows of GRB 980703, 990123, 990510, and 991216, within the framework of relativistic jets, to determine their physical parameters. The models that yield acceptable fits to the data have jet energies mostly between 10 to 10 erg and initial opening angles between 1 and 4. The external medium density is uncertain by at least one order o...

Polarimetric constraints on the optical afterglow emission from GRB 990123

Polarization of the optical emission from GRB 990123 was measured on 24.17 January 1999 universal time with the Nordic Optical Telescope. An upper limit of 2.3% on the linear polarization was found. Accurate polarization measurements provide important clues to the blast wave geometry and magnetic field structure of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). The lack of detectable polarization for GRB 990123 indi...

GRB 990123 established the existence of prompt optical emission from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). The Livermore Optical Transient Imaging System (LOTIS) has been conducting a fully automated search for this kind of simultaneous low energy emission from GRBs since October 1996. Although LOTIS has obtained simultaneous, or near simultaneous, coverage of the error boxes obtained with BATSE, IPN, XTE, ...
